Assam CM Unveils UNESCO Recognition Plaque at Historic Charaideo Moidams

Assam launches conservation, research and tourism push after World Heritage recognition

Charaideo: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday formally unveiled the UNESCO World Heritage plaque at the Charaideo Moidam complex, marking a landmark moment in the state’s cultural and historical journey. The recognition was granted during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in New Delhi on July 26, 2024, placing the Ahom era burial mounds on the global heritage map.

Describing the honour as one of the most significant achievements of the state government in the past decade, the Chief Minister said the recognition would strengthen Assam’s identity while boosting tourism and research. Visitor numbers have already risen sharply, with around 200 foreign and nearly 80,000 domestic tourists recorded last year.

The Chief Minister outlined a comprehensive preservation roadmap. Key priorities include promoting academic research, ensuring regular maintenance through dedicated funds, encouraging community participation, and developing a protective buffer zone around 21 Moidams and nearby heritage structures.

A specialised research centre will also be established under a university to facilitate doctoral studies and scientific exploration, including excavation and DNA preservation of artefacts.

An allocation of Rs 25 crore has been earmarked for conservation, alongside increased staffing and annual upkeep measures. More strategies are also underway to develop homestays, eco-friendly guesthouses, and cultural festivals such as Me-Dam-Me-Phi to engage local communities and enhance visitor experiences.

Subsequently, often compared to Egypt’s pyramids, the Moidams, nearly 90 royal burial mounds built by the Tai-Ahoms over 600 years, stand as architectural and engineering marvels. The government aims to transform Charaideo into a major national and international heritage tourism destination while safeguarding its sacred legacy for future generations.
