Assam CM to Meet Bhupen Kumar Borah on Feb 17: Says “Congress Collapse Has Begun in Assam”

CM calls Congress ‘sinking fast’, says leaders from ordinary families have little space as internal crisis deepens ahead of 2026 polls

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday reacted strongly to the resignation of former APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah, terming it “symbolic and inevitable” and asserting that the Indian National Congress is rapidly losing ground in the state.

The Chief Minister announced that he will personally visit Borah’s residence on the evening of February 17 to discuss his future political course. “I have informed him about my visit. I will meet him and talk about his future vision,” the Chief Minister told reporters, adding that there is no immediate confirmation of Borah joining the Bharatiya Janata Party, but he should be given time and space to decide.

“In Congress, no one from a normal family can prosper,” the Chief Minister states, alleging that dynastic influence and selective favouritism dominate decision-making. He accused the party of appeasement politics and internal mistrust, arguing that grassroots leaders feel increasingly alienated.

The Chief Minister also questioned the Congress’s internal functioning, from leadership confusion to alliance disputes, and predicted more resignations in the coming months. According to him, several leaders may quit as the party struggles to maintain cohesion ahead of the Assembly elections.

Framing Borah’s departure as a turning point, the Chief Minister said the resignation signals a larger political realignment in Assam. “People are noticing it. The Congress in Assam is sinking fast,” he added.
