The Assam Chief Minister initiates civil and criminal proceedings against Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi over allegedly false and defamatory statements.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has filed a defamation suit seeking Rs 500 crore in damages against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel, and Gaurav Gogoi. The action follows what the CM described as “false, malicious and defamatory allegations” made against him during a press conference.
Announcing the move on his social media platform ‘X’, the Chief Minister stated that both civil and criminal defamation proceedings were being initiated on 9 February 2026 against the three leaders, along with Debabrata Saikia, for making statements he claims were intended to tarnish his reputation.
The CM emphasised that the proceedings are a legal step to address the alleged misinformation and protect his personal and professional integrity. Legal experts say that such high-value defamation suits are rare and signal the seriousness with which the complainant is pursuing the matter.
This development is likely to intensify political tensions in Assam as the matter moves through the courts, highlighting the increasingly litigious approach to political disputes in the state.
