The Chief Minister highlights 45% growth, rising revenues and stronger fiscal space while outlining Assam’s economic transformation in the Assembly.

Guwahati: Assam has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing economies, recording a sharp 45 per cent growth over the past five years, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said while addressing the Assam Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
Highlighting the milestone, the Chief Minister states, “Over the past five years, Assam has recorded a 45% economic growth and earned formal recognition as one of India’s fastest-growing economies.”
The Chief Minister further added that the state is now entering a new phase of accelerated expansion, projecting growth of around 26–27 per cent in the coming years. Assam’s tax devolution alone stands at nearly Rs 50,000 crore, while the state’s own revenue collection is expected to cross Rs 30,000 crore next year.
Explaining the fiscal position, the Chief Minister noted that around Rs 4,000 crore is required for salaries and pensions of government employees. Even after meeting these commitments, he said, the government will have substantial fiscal space left for development projects.
The Chief Minister reiterated his long-term economic vision, stating that Assam is on track to become a Rs 10 lakh crore economy ahead of schedule. Citing the latest Economic Survey, he said the state is projected to grow at nearly 17 per cent in 2026–27, which could push the economy to Rs 8.71 lakh crore next year.
“By March 31, 2028, Assam will join the big league as a Rs 10 lakh crore economy, two years ahead of our earlier projections,” he said.
Comparing national and state performance, the Chief Minister pointed out that according to the Reserve Bank of India, India’s overall growth between 2021 and 2025 stood at around 29 per cent, while Assam registered a significantly higher 45 per cent.
Moreover, Assam’s per capita income has nearly doubled from Rs 86,947 in 2020–21 to Rs 1,85,429 in 2025–26, indicating stronger purchasing power and rising living standards.
Calling it a moment of pride, the Chief Minister said Assam is no longer just leading the Northeast but is now counted among the fastest-growing economies in the entire country.
