Union Home Minister and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma honour martyrs, showcase security strength, and unveil major policing infrastructure at Sonapur

Guwahati: In a historic first for the region, Assam and the North-East hosted the 87th Raising Day Parade of the Central Reserve Police Force in Guwahati, marking a proud moment for the state’s growing role in national security and integration.

The grand ceremony was attended by Amit Shah, Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, along with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior officials. The event paid tribute to the force’s brave martyrs and highlighted the discipline, valour and unwavering commitment of CRPF personnel in safeguarding the nation.

The parade was held at the Bhogeshwar Barua Sports Complex, featured ceremonial contingents and tactical demonstrations, drawing participation from top officers, including the Director General of the force. The occasion was widely seen as recognition of the North-East’s strategic importance in India’s security landscape.

Calling it a matter of immense pride, the Union Minister said celebrating the CRPF’s foundation in Assam reflects the Centre’s commitment to bringing national institutions closer to the region. The CRPF, India’s largest paramilitary force, has played a pivotal role in maintaining internal security and combating insurgency across the country.

During his visit, the Union Minister also laid the foundation stone for the 10th battalion headquarters of the Assam Police at Kosutoli Sonapur. The site, reclaimed from decades of illegal encroachment, will be transformed into a modern battalion campus equipped with advanced training facilities, residential quarters, healthcare services, sports infrastructure and plans for a medical college and other government institutions.

Moreover, describing the project as a major step toward strengthening law enforcement, the Chief Minister said the new campus would enhance operational readiness and improve living conditions for personnel. He reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to build a robust security infrastructure and create a modern, well-equipped police force.

The two-day visit concluded of the Union Minister with multiple inaugurations and foundation stone ceremonies for key development projects. For many in Assam, the twin milestones of hosting the CRPF parade and launching a major police infrastructure project symbolised both honour and progress, placing the North-East firmly at the heart of India’s national security framework.
