Akhil Gogoi Predicts ‘Inevitable Change’ in Assam: Slams Pre-Poll Violence in Sivasagar

The Raijor Dal Chief expresses confidence in opposition win, outlines development roadmap for Sivasagar

Sivasagar: Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar candidate Akhil Gogoi cast his vote on Thursday, April 9, as polling got underway in Assam, reiterating his confidence that the state is headed for a political shift.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said public sentiment indicates a clear desire for change. “People are ready for a new government. There is widespread dissatisfaction, and this time, the BJP will be voted out,” he remarked.

Gogoi further raised concerns over incidents of violence reported in the run-up to polling, particularly in Sivasagar. Terming such developments “undemocratic,” Gogoi said, “This is not the language of democracy. Assam has seen enough violence, and such incidents must stop.” He urged authorities to ensure a peaceful electoral environment and appealed for restraint.

The Raijor Dal leader also aimed at his political opponents, claiming that voters are increasingly aware of the backgrounds of candidates and would factor that into their choices.

At the same time, Gogoi highlighted his development record in Sivasagar, pointing to multiple infrastructure and public welfare projects initiated during his tenure. These include flood control measures along the Brahmaputra, urban water supply schemes, road development works, and heritage restoration efforts.

Looking ahead, Gogoi outlined an ambitious vision for the constituency, centred on three priorities: transforming Sivasagar into a major tourism hub, developing it as an education centre with premier institutions, and establishing a strong healthcare network.

As polling unfolds, Sivasagar remains one of the most closely watched seats in Assam, with the outcome expected to reflect both local dynamics and broader political currents in the state.
