AIUDF Walks Out of Assam Assembly Over Rejected Motion on CM’s ‘Miya’ Remarks

Political standoff erupts as opposition alleges rising harassment of Bengali-speaking Muslims and demands urgent debate in the House

Guwahati: Legislators of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staged a walkout from the Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday after the Speaker rejected their adjournment motion seeking an urgent discussion on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s alleged provocative remarks against the ‘Miya‘ community.

Moving the motion, AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam accused the Chief Minister of “inciting” people through statements that he claimed had led to harassment of Bengali-speaking Muslims, particularly in Upper Assam. He alleged that several individuals were assaulted, forced to leave their workplaces, and threatened by groups going door to door in some districts, warning homeowners against renting houses to Miya residents.

The MLA further states that the situation had created fear among daily wage earners and migrant workers, with many unable to move freely for employment while law enforcement remained largely inactive. Calling the matter urgent and recent, the MLA urged the House to allow an immediate discussion through an adjournment motion.

However, Speaker Biswajit Daimary ruled that while the issue was important, it could be raised during the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s address, where the chief minister would have an opportunity to respond. He also noted that procedural constraints, including the scheduled presentation of the vote-on-account, prevented the admission of the adjournment motion. “Accordingly, the adjournment motion is rejected,” he said.

Following the ruling, opposition members raised slogans in protest before walking out of the House.
