“After 32 Years, I Begin a New Chapter”: Borah Set to Join BJP on Feb 22

Assam leader says decision taken with “conviction and clarity”: to formally join in presence of Himanta Biswa Sarma and senior BJP leaders

Guwahati: Senior Assam politician Bhupen Kumar Borah has announced that he will join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), ending his 32-year association with the Indian National Congress.

In a public statement, Borah said the move marks the beginning of a “new chapter” in his political life. “After 32 long years in the Indian National Congress, tomorrow I begin a new chapter by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party. It is not an easy decision, but it is one taken with conviction, clarity, and a renewed commitment to serve the people,” he said.

The formal joining programme will be held at the party’s state headquarters, where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other senior BJP leaders are expected to be present.

Borah also referred to his recent meetings with top leaders, including Amit Shah and the Chief Minister, describing the interactions as significant. “32 years vs 32 hours, the difference is visible. Grateful to the Hon’ble Union Home Minister for yesterday’s meeting, and to our Hon’ble Chief Minister for visiting my residence the day before. Change brings clarity,” he said.

The former Congress leader’s switch is being seen as a notable political development in Assam, with observers suggesting it could influence opposition dynamics ahead of the upcoming elections.
