Cristiano Ronaldo Announces International Retirement: Ends 23-Year Portugal Career

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner bows out as Portugal’s record scorer and most-capped men’s international, with 146 goals in 234 appearances

New Delhi: Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal. The 41-year-old forward made the announcement on Thursday through a video message shared on Instagram, describing the decision as an emotional one.

“Today the time has come to hand it over to the future,” Ronaldo said, referring to Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt, which he wore with pride since making his international debut in August 2003.

Ronaldo retires as the leading men’s international goalscorer and appearance-maker, with 146 goals in 234 matches. He captained Portugal to the Euro 2016 title and two UEFA Nations League triumphs, in 2019 and 2025.

His announcement follows a reported fallout with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over playing time and a 30-day suspension imposed by the Portuguese football federation after Ronaldo walked out of the national team during the previous international window.

Despite ending his international career, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing for Al Nassr at club level. He currently has 985 career goals and remains in pursuit of the historic 1,000-goal milestone.

Portugal’s football federation paid tribute to the forward, calling his contribution to the national team extraordinary and pledging to organise a fitting celebration of his legacy.
