Silchar votes in its first-ever Municipal Corporation election as around 2.7 lakh voters choose representatives across 40 wards in a historic civic poll

Silchar: Silchar is voting in its first-ever Municipal Corporation election on October 03, marking a major shift in the civic administration of the Barak Valley city after it was upgraded from a municipal board to a corporation.
Polling is being held across 40 of the corporation’s 42 wards, with BJP candidates having already been elected unopposed in the remaining two. Around 2.7 lakh voters are eligible to cast their ballots, with 131 candidates contesting the 40 wards and 303 polling stations set up across the city.
The polling-day exercise has been backed by extensive administrative and security arrangements. More than 700 security personnel have been deployed, while the polling area has been divided into six zones and 18 sectors. Additional security measures are in place at 39 sensitive polling stations.
The election will determine the first elected representatives of the newly constituted corporation and marks a new phase in Silchar’s urban governance. The corporation has 42 wards and became operational after the town’s elevation from a municipal board.
Counting of votes is scheduled for October 6, when Silchar will get its first elected municipal corporation body.
