Sanmiet remains in custody alongside KSU president Raymond Kharjana and general secretary Reuben Najiar
Shillong: The Shillong District Sessions Court rejected the bail application of KSU vice-president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, who remains in custody in connection with recent developments in Shillong.
Sanmiet’s counsel had sought bail on health grounds, citing his poor medical condition. The court did not immediately provide reasons for rejecting the plea. He is among the three senior KSU leaders currently in custody. KSU president Raymond Kharjana and general secretary Reuben Najiar are also detained.
Former KSU general secretary Donald V. Thabah said the release of the three leaders was not discussed during talks between representatives and the Meghalaya government on Wednesday.
According to Thabah, the detained leaders remain focused on the organisation’s charter of demands rather than their continued custody. “The arrested leaders told us that their being in jail is not a matter of concern. What they are concerned about is the charter of demands,” Thabah said.
Kharjana, Najiar and Sanmiet were brought back to Shillong District Jail on Tuesday after being shifted to facilities in Tura and Williamnagar. The three leaders continue to remain in custody as discussions over the KSU’s demands and the wider situation in Shillong continue.
