NFR will operate only diesel-hauled trains on the restored section as flood-displaced residents continue to shelter near the railway tracks
Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has restored railway tracks damaged by recent floods at Simaluguri and adjoining areas in Assam’s Sivasagar district, while introducing precautionary measures to protect passengers and flood-displaced residents.
NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava inspected the restored railway tracks, bridges and other infrastructure under the Tinsukia Division to assess the condition of the affected corridor.
During the inspection, railway authorities found several flood-displaced residents, including children, along with their belongings and livestock, sheltering on or near the railway tracks. In view of the situation, NFR has decided to operate only diesel locomotive-hauled trains on the restored section for the time being.
The temporary arrangement is aimed at reducing the risk of electrocution from overhead electric lines and protecting people sheltering near the tracks until normal conditions return.
Several local services will operate via Moranhat, including the Nagaland Express, Guwahati–Ledo Intercity Express, Rangiya–Ledo Intercity Express, Lumding–Tinsukia DEMU and Tinsukia–Jorhat Town Passenger.
Long-distance trains will continue to operate on diverted routes via North Lakhimpur, Rangapara North and Rangiya until further notice. NFR has also been running special trains to maintain connectivity with Upper Assam.
Electric train operations will resume after floodwaters recede and displaced residents return home, the railway said.
