Mawsynram’s 530 mm Downpour Hits Shillong-Dawki Highway: IMD Warns of More Rain

Relentless rainfall batters Meghalaya as Mawsynram records extreme precipitation; road link to Dawki disrupted after highway section collapses

Shillong: Meghalaya witnessed one of its heaviest monsoon spells of the season, with Mawsynram recording an extraordinary 530 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, while relentless downpours damaged a crucial stretch of the Shillong-Dawki highway, disrupting connectivity towards the India-Bangladesh border.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mawsynram’s rainfall in a single day was comparable to the amount typically received over several months in arid cities such as Jodhpur and Bikaner. Other areas also reported intense precipitation, including RKM Sohra (470 mm) and Mawkyrwat (390 mm).

The heavy rainfall washed away a section of the Shillong-Dawki national highway near Laitlyngkot, around 35 km from Shillong. Although no casualties were reported, traffic movement towards Dawki has been severely affected. Restoration work is underway by officials of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL).

Meanwhile, the IMD reported that Meghalaya experienced extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations, with heavy to very heavy showers across multiple districts during the past 24 hours. The weather agency has forecast continued intense rainfall on June 21 and 22, particularly in East Khasi Hills, and warned of possible waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, and traffic disruptions.

A flash flood guidance bulletin has also identified East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, and the Jaintia Hills among districts facing a low-to-moderate flood threat as monsoon activity remains active across the state.
