Rajen Gohain Resigns from AJP Months After Joining Regional Party

Veteran Assam politician steps down from all party responsibilities months after joining Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and contesting the Assembly polls from Barhampur

Guwahati: Senior Assam politician and former Union Minister Rajen Gohain has resigned from the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), ending his short stint with the regional party. He cited personal reasons for stepping away from active responsibilities within the organisation.

In his resignation letter addressed to AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Gohain announced that he was stepping down from the party’s primary membership as well as all official positions with immediate effect.

“Due to personal reasons, I have decided to resign from the primary membership and all posts and responsibilities associated with the Asom Jatiya Parishad,” Gohain stated in the letter. He also thanked the party leadership, workers and supporters for their cooperation during his time with the organisation.

The 75-year-old leader had recently contested the Assam Assembly elections from the Barhampur constituency but lost to BJP candidate Jitu Goswami. Although Gohain said he now plans to devote more time to his personal life, his resignation has sparked fresh political speculation regarding his future course.

A prominent figure in Assam politics, Gohain previously served as a BJP Member of Parliament from the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency. During his tenure in the Centre, he also held the position of Union Minister of State for Railways.
