UDF gains early momentum across constituencies while LDF trails in initial rounds

The counting of votes for the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections commenced at 8 am on Monday, May 4, under tight supervision. A total of 140 counting centres spread across 43 locations have been set up to process votes cast on April 9. As per protocol, postal ballots were taken up first, setting the stage for early trends.
As the process gathered momentum, initial figures pointed to a clear advantage for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). After the first few rounds, the UDF established a strong lead in 100 out of 140 constituencies, indicating a significant early edge.
In contrast, the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) was ahead in 40 seats, suggesting a slower start for the incumbent alliance. Meanwhile, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) remained marginal in the race, according to data from the Election Commission of India.
These early trends, however, represent only the initial phase of counting. As more rounds are completed and EVM votes are fully tallied, the margins may shift. Therefore, while the UDF’s early surge is notable, the final outcome will depend on the consolidation of results across all constituencies.
