Attack along Imphal-Ukhrul road raises fresh security concerns; Naga bodies demand action, warn against “misreading restraint”

Imphal: Fresh violence has rocked Manipur’s Ukhrul district after two men from the Tangkhul Naga community were killed in an ambush on April 18, intensifying tensions in the region. The attack occurred near T.M. Kasom village along National Highway 202 when a group of vehicles travelling from Imphal to Ukhrul came under fire around 2:35 pm.
The victims, identified as Chinaoshang Shokwungnao (45), a former member of the Naga Regiment from Tashar village, and Yaruingam Vashum (42) from Kharasom CC, were reportedly travelling in separate vehicles. At least three other vehicles sustained damage during the assault.
According to local accounts and statements from the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the convoy was attacked shortly after security escorts had moved away. The organisation alleged that armed cadres used long-range weapons and targeted civilians, including women and children, raising serious concerns over safety on the route. It also criticised what it described as “inadequate security arrangements” in vulnerable areas.
Soon after the incident, central forces and state police reached the site and launched further operations. However, the attack came just a day after an unexploded “pumpi” shell was recovered near a residential area in Sinakeithei village, highlighting a pattern of escalating threats.
Reacting strongly, the United Naga Council (UNC) reiterated its commitment to peaceful coexistence but issued a cautionary note. “We seek peaceful coexistence with all communities. However, if our neutral stance is mistaken for weakness, we will be compelled to defend our people,” UNC president Ng. Lorho said.
As tensions rise, civil bodies have urged both state and central governments to step up security measures and prevent further violence, warning that continued instability could deepen the crisis.
