Manipur Violence: CM Y. Khemchand Singh Orders NIA Probe After Fatal Blast

Curfew imposed, internet suspended as protests turn violent after deaths of two children

Imphal: Fresh unrest gripped Manipur on Tuesday, April 7, after a bomb explosion in Bishnupur district killed two young siblings, triggering violent protests and prompting the state to hand over the case to the National Investigation Agency.

Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate attempt to disturb peace. He announced that the probe would now be handled by the NIA, even as security forces launched extensive search operations to track down those responsible.

The incident, which claimed the lives of a five-year-old boy and his infant sister, sparked outrage in the region. Protests soon escalated, with a mob storming a CRPF camp in Bishnupur. Security personnel opened fire to disperse the crowd, resulting in at least three more deaths and multiple injuries.

Authorities have since intensified security deployment, with police, central forces, and aerial surveillance being used to control the situation. Several vehicles and properties were damaged during the unrest.

In response, the government imposed an indefinite curfew across Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts. Internet and mobile data services have also been suspended in multiple valley districts to curb the spread of misinformation and prevent further escalation.

Officials said the situation remains tense but under close watch. The Chief Minister appealed for calm and urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to restore order.
