Policy document highlights innovation, youth engagement and sustainable farming as key growth drivers

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh outlined a long-term strategy to strengthen agriculture in the Northeast, positioning the sector as a key driver of economic growth leading up to 2047.
The policy document, titled “Agricultural Extension Innovations for Achieving a US $1.3 Trillion North East India Economy @ 2047 (Shillong Declaration),” was released at an event in Imphal, presenting a roadmap for modernising agriculture and expanding its economic potential.
Emphasising the sector’s significance, the CM noted that more than half of the region’s population is dependent on agriculture, underscoring the need for sustained focus and targeted interventions.
He highlighted innovation and entrepreneurship as critical tools to unlock opportunities, particularly for young people, adding that such initiatives can bridge the gap between ideas and real-world applications.
The Chief Minister also indicated that the government, in coordination with the Planning Department, is working on ways to enhance returns from agriculture, especially for the youth within the evolving startup ecosystem.
Referring to the Northeast’s inherent strengths, he said the region is well-positioned to emerge as a hub for high-value, sustainable agricultural practices driven by research, innovation and skilled manpower.
