Denied Ticket Jayanta Das to Go Independent: Levels Fake Account Charge Against BJP

Jayanta Kumar Das alleges 10,000 fake accounts run from party headquarters: Dilip Saikia defends social media role amid Dispur ticket row

Guwahati: After resigning from all his positions, Jayanta Kumar Das announced that he will file his nomination on March 23 and contest the Dispur seat independently if required.

The move comes after Das was denied a party ticket from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), prompting him to openly criticise the leadership and warn that sidelining long-time workers could hurt the party’s electoral prospects. He also launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, questioning his political strength and raising allegations of “political syndicates.”

Amid his rebellion, the former BJP leader levelled serious allegations against the party, claiming that nearly 10,000 fake social media accounts are being operated from the BJP’s state headquarters at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati. He alleged that these accounts are managed from “Room No. 501,” where individuals are hired to run coordinated campaigns targeting critics and dissenting voices.

Responding to the controversy, Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia sought to downplay the claims, emphasising the growing role of digital platforms in modern politics. In a pointed remark, he said Das spoke about Room 501 but “forgot Room 401,” referring to the president’s office, and asserted that social media has become an integral part of political activity.

While the party has attempted damage control, including outreach by a central delegation led by Sambit Patra, the episode highlights rising internal tensions ahead of the Assembly elections.
