Commission directs immediate reshuffle of district police chiefs to ensure neutral administration during elections

Guwahati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Government of Assam to reshuffle several IPS officers in the state as a part of the preparation for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly election.
The instruction, issued on March 16 from the Commission’s headquarters at Nirvachan Sadan, calls for the immediate transfer and posting of officers to ensure impartial policing and effective administrative readiness during the election period.
Under the new postings, Somalin Shubhdarshini (IPS 2019) has been assigned as the Senior Superintendent of Police of Majuli. R. Sheetal Kumar (IPS 2020) will take charge as SSP of South Salmara-Mankachar district, while Anchal Chauhan (IPS 2020) has been posted as SSP of Sadiya.
In addition, Sudhakar Singh (IPS 2013) has been appointed SSP of Chirang district, and Mohan Lal Meena (IPS 2016) will head the police in Dhemaji district.
The poll panel instructed the state authorities to enforce the order without delay and confirm compliance. According to the directive, a report verifying that the officers have taken charge at their new postings must be submitted to the Commission by 11 am on March 17.
The order further clarified that officials who have been shifted from their previous assignments should not be entrusted with any election-related duties for the remainder of the electoral process.
