Sunita Kejriwal calls the arrest politically driven after Rouse Avenue Court Complex finds no evidence, cites weak investigation, and discharges all 23 accused

New Delhi: In a major legal development, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court Complex on February 27 discharged former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and all other accused in the Central Bureau of Investigation excise policy case. The court said the agency failed to present enough material to move ahead.
Special Judge Jitender Singh passed the order. He refused to frame charges in the corruption case and discharged all 23 accused. The judge found the case record weak and noted several gaps in the chargesheet. Witness statements lacked proper support, and corroborative material was absent.
The court said no prima facie case existed and flagged serious gaps in the prosecution’s evidence. The judge noted that investigators named Kejriwal without any clear material linking him to the alleged offence. He stressed that only a fair investigation can ensure a fair trial.
The case centred on alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy. The CBI claimed a “south lobby” paid kickbacks to influence the policy. The defence said no incriminating material connected any accused to a conspiracy.
Reacting to the verdict, Sunita Kejriwal saidher husband had been jailed “for the sake of power,” calling the case politically driven. The discharge has now brought significant relief to the accused and their families.
